Quantifying the uncertainty in 35GHz+94GHz space-borne radar retrievals of rain

چکیده
The main capability of the dual-frequency profiling radar proposed for deployment on the Aerosol/Cloud/Ecosystems (ACE) mission [1] is its ability to allow retrievals of vertical profiles of water content and mean hydrometeor size. At the center of this capability is the notion that measuring the radar reflectivity at two sufficiently different frequencies should allow the retrieval of two water variables. Since the measurements are made vertical-bin by vertical-bin, from the measurements of the vertical profiles of the pair of average reflectivity factors in each bin, one would retrieve the average water content and the average hydrometeor size in that bin. The main problems with this notion are

Improved rain rate and drop size retrievals from airborne Doppler radar
Satellite remote sensing of rain is important for quantifying the hydrological cycle, atmospheric energy budget, and cloud and precipitation processes; however, radar retrievals of rain rate are sensitive to assumptions about the raindrop size distribution. The upcoming EarthCARE satellite will feature a 94 GHz Doppler radar alongside lidar and radiometer instruments, presenting opportunities f...
متن کاملVertical profiling of tropical precipitation using passive microwave observations and its implications regarding the crash of AF447
In a recent study (Haddad and Park, 2009), a method was proposed to use co-located simultaneous observations by the space-borne Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) precipitation radar and microwave imager to train the microwave radiometer to retrieve vertical profiles of precipitation in the absence of radar observations. This radartrained passive-microwave approach was developed for mid...
متن کاملImpact of Cloud Model Microphysics on Passive Microwave Retrievals of Cloud Properties. Part II: Uncertainty in Rain, Hydrometeor Structure, and Latent Heating Retrievals
The impact of model microphysics on the retrieval of cloud properties based on passive microwave observations was examined using a three-dimensional, nonhydrostatic, adaptive-grid cloud model to simulate a mesoscale convective system over ocean. Two microphysical schemes, based on similar bulk two-class liquid and three-class ice parameterizations, were used to simulate storms with differing am...
متن کاملAn intercomparison of radar-based liquid cloud microphysics retrievals and implications for model evaluation studies
This paper presents a statistical comparison of three cloud retrieval products of the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) program at the Southern Great Plains (SGP) site from 1998 to 2006: MICROBASE, University of Utah (UU), and University of North Dakota (UND) products. The probability density functions of the various cloud liquid water content (LWC) retrievals appear to be consistent with...
متن کاملSimulation of Space-borne Radar Observations of Precipitation at Ku and Ka Band
Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) is poised to be the next generation precipitation observations from space after the TRMM mission. The GPM will carry a dual-frequency precipitation radar (DPR), operating at Ku and Ka band frequencies. Since space-borne precipitation observations have never been done in Ka band before, extensive research work on dualfrequency radar, including electromagnet...
